How to use theBoom with a PC or Apple Mac

theBoom can be easily used with the PC or Mac by utilizing a special adapter and a USB sound card (in the case of Apple Macs). In both cases, the adapter is a two-pronged cable with a red and black plug on the end. This can be a tremendous benefit for users, as it allows you to bring the patented noise-reduction technology to several applications; like Skype, voice recognition programs, note dictation and gaming.

PC’s usually have the two ports needed for you to plug your headset into the main case. This is usually located on the back of the computer, near the monitor and networking ports. In some cases, the PC will have a port for the Microphone and Headset on the front for easy access. Laptops generally have the ports on the side or front of the unit.

If you are having difficulty locating the jacks for your headset and microphone, we strongly suggest you consult your computers manual or supplier for the exact location. Once the headset is plugged in, you will be able to use the functionality of theBoom for your web and application-based programs.

Apple Macs generally do not come with the dual ports needed for a headset, relying on the single port proprietary design for their own headsets. In such a case, you will need to purchase a USB interface sound card. These simple products plug into a free USB slot on your Mac and on the other end has the two ports needed to use the Headset.

theBoom plugs into these ports on the USB sound card much like it would in a PC. Some sound cards need to be installed on your Apple machine, so please refer to the manufactures instructions when setting up the soundcard for use.

Using theBoom with your home or office phone

Telephones have many ways of using a headset. Although most of these are simple and easy to work with, a couple phones need an amplifier or a special connection. In all cases, using theBoom has aided the public and professional workers in both a home and office environment.

Most office phones use a standard RJ-9 port on the underside of the telephone itself. For an example of the cable size, you can look at the type of jack that your telephone handset uses to connect to the telephone. Next to the headset input, a user can usually find another port depicted with a headset symbol.

Similarly, a standard 2.5mm or 3.5mm jack can be evident on your phone. These are the same kind of jacks that you would use for a portable CD player or MP3 player. These jacks are usually located in a more accessible place like the front or side of the phone unit.

If a standard jack or RJ-9 connection is not available, then you can get a Plantronics Vista Amp can be used to switch between the handset and a headset. This very simple piece of equipment sits to the side of your telephone and has a button allowing you to select the best piece of the equipment for the situation.

One last alternative is the hands-free telephone. Most of these cordless phones have a standard 2.5mm jack on the side of the phone itself; however you should note that these cordless phones have a lessened power outage to these headsets due to battery-saving technology in the phone itself. This may leave your headset seeming low in volume.

If you are ordering a headset with this single use in mind, please be sure to let us know that it is being solely used for the purposed of a cordless phone. We will increase the sensitivity of the microphone so that the headset will function normally on your device, but it is not suggested it be used on another device, as the heightened sensitivity may compromise the noise-reduction of the microphone.

In all case of Office or Home telephones, please be sure to consult your OEM provider or the manual that came with the phone to see what kind of connection, compatibility and suggestions your manufacture may have when using theBoom.

Speech Recognition Tips

TheBoom end-piece should be positioned 1"-1.5" from your mouth, with the microphone end facing your mouth. For theBoom O, make sure that the end-piece is not directly below your nostrils, but more near the corner of your lips.

Make sure that the windscreen is installed on the end-piece.

Many speech recognizers provide a recording (audio input) level adjustment tool (software). If there is such a tool provided with the speech recognizer, please run it to set the microphone level before using the microphone for recognition/enrollment/training. If there is no such tool, you can manually set the microphone level such that there is no clipping for the range of speech input expected during regular use of the speech recognizer.
