The VUI
We are all used to Graphical User Interfaces, or GUIs. As we type on our keyboards, our computers respond, giving us information back or asking for further instruction. For example, a box may pop up asking if you want to save before exiting a document, or with a warning if you attempt to give a new file the same name as a pre-existing file.
Voice recognition software opens up the possibility of a whole new level of interaction between the computer and the user. The computer now needs to respond to the user's voice rather than the keyboard and mouse. The Voice User Interface (VUI) can operate in one of two ways: responding to voice commands with traditional graphical prompts (and occasional beeps or other sounds) or with a verbal response.
UmeVoice is on the road to perfecting a very intuitive VUI for the desktop and eventually for the exploding world of wireless computing. The VUI in the UmeVoice infrastructure currently consists of primarily graphical cues to the user. Significantly, however it is based on a simple paradigm: "Say it, See it, and Send it." The user speaks commands to the computer, looks to see that what they have spoken has appeared on the screen, and then sends or enters the information with a verbal command. Eventually more sound and voice response from the computer will be developed for this system.
